It’s Obama’s way on the highway: The president tightened gas-mileage standards for new cars and trucks Thursday, setting a goal of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. That’s a 10 mpg boost over the current standard. Good news for American automakers: Auto companies will have their individual standards set on a sliding scale, so that companies that manufacture larger cars and trucks will have a lower goal.
