The White House has issued an executive order declaring a national emergency regarding Venezuela’s human-rights issues and placed sanctions on several of its officials. The executive order was signed by President Obama due to “the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by” the country. Its president, Nicolas Maduro, has thrown opposition leaders in jail and taken Americans captive. The country has also seen its economy tank, with the price of everything from toilet paper to condoms hitting unbelievable highs.
