Obama Wants Nicer Afghan Policy

Friends?

Change in mood comes as Karzai visits Washington.

President Barack Obama has a new message for his foreign policy team: stop picking on Hamid Karzai. After weeks of tough talk from American officials directed at the Afghan president, Obama is calling for a warmer approach towards the leader of the war-torn nation. The about-face comes as Karzai prepares to visit Washington Monday. An administration official tells The Washington Post, "There has been a rough patch...But the bottom line is that there has been an improvement since then in the atmospherics and in the substance of our dealings with President Karzai and his team." While in Washington, Karzai will spend the week meeting with a variety of senior officials. He has a tough task ahead of him. According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, a majority of Americans think the Afghanistan war “is not worth fighting."
