Never-before-seen photos featured exclusively in Time show a 17-year-old Barack Obama the night of his prom—drinking champagne and giggling with his date and another couple. Kelli Allman, who is pictured next to him and owns the photos, says they capture a great moment in the group’s lives. “It was a really fun, happy time. We were all cracking up,” she recounts. Greg Orme, also pictured, was Obama’s best friend. “They were like brothers,” Allman says. Also included in Allman’s memory box is a note Obama wrote her in their 1979 high school yearbook. “You are extremely sweet and foxy,” he writes. “I don’t know why Greg would want to spend any time with me!”
