Oil in Gulf Matches Deepwater Horizon Well

Scientists have confirmed that the oil rising to the surface near the site of the Deepwater Horizon well is a chemical match to the oil that flooded the Gulf after the oil spill last summer, known as MC252. One scientist who examined the oil said, “My guess is that it is probably coming from the broken riser pipe or sunken platform…However, it should be confirmed, just to make sure there is no leak from the plugged well.” BP officials said they had checked the well and found no leaks, saying via email, “There is still no evidence that the oil came from the Macondo well.”
