French authorities say the man accused of carrying out a fatal knife attack in the heart of Paris on Saturday was a Chechen native with French citizenship who was known to counter-terrorism officials. The unidentified attacker killed a 29-year-old man and wounded four others before fleeing and later being shot dead by police. Witnesses reported hearing him yell “Allahu Akbar!” during the stabbing spree, and the so-called Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. While the suspected attacker is said to have had no record of arrests, a judicial official cited by the Associated Press said he was listed in a national database of individuals with suspected links to extremism. Counter-terrorism investigators have reportedly detained his parents for questioning as they try to determine whether he acted alone.
