The Pentagon has named the U.S. soldier killed in Syria this week as 36-year-old US Army Master Sgt. Jonathan Dunbar from Austin, Texas. Dunbar died Friday, a day after falling victim to a roadside bomb attack in Syria’s Manbij, the Department of Defense said in a statement. Dunbar began his military career as an infantryman in May 2005 before being deployed numerous times to Afghanistan and Iraq. British soldier Sgt. Matt Tonroe, another member of the U.S.-led coalition in Syria, was also killed in the explosion, and five members of the coalition were reportedly injured. Dunbar’s death, which happened just hours after President Trump vowed to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria “very soon,” marks the second U.S. combat death in the country.
