As many as 36 people could be trapped under thick mud after a typhoon pounding the Philippines triggered a deadly landslide. Rescuers are working desperately to find survivors in the mining town of Itogon, in Benguet province, where at least 35 people have died as a result of the storm. Many of the dead and missing are believed to be miners and their families who sought refuge in the local church during the extreme weather. “As of now, we are still looking for the 36 still missing individuals that are still unverified,” Lt.Gen Emmanuel Salamat of the Philippines Armed Forces told CNN early Monday morning. “They were advised to move out because that is a hazardous area during typhoons, it might kill them and it really happened.” Mohammed Abdiker, director of operations and emergencies for the U.N. Migration Agency, says as many as 50 people could be under the mud.
