A Republican lawmaker accused by federal prosecutors of spending $250,000 worth of campaign funds on personal items appeared to blame his wife for his legal woes in an interview with Fox News late Thursday. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), one of President Trump’s biggest supporters in Congress, and his wife, Margaret Hunter, pleaded not guilty to federal charges on Thursday morning. The pair is accused of pocketing campaign money to fund everything from family vacations to household items, and then falsifying records to cover it up. Hours after appearing in court, Hunter told Fox News his wife was in charge of finances. “She handled my finances throughout my entire military career, and that continued on when I got into Congress. She was also the campaign manager, so whatever she did, that’ll be looked at too, I’m sure,” he said. “But I didn’t do it. I didn’t spend any money illegally.”
