According to a new report in Gizmodo, Google removed its unofficial motto, “don’t be evil,” from its code of conduct in late April or early May. Using the Wayback Machine, the site determined that the phrase had appeared at the beginning of its corporate code of conduct on April 21, 2018, but had disappeared from that spot as of May 4. There is still a line at the end of the updated code of conduct that references the motto, saying: “And remember… don’t be evil, and if you see something that you think isn’t right – speak up!” The phrase had been part of the corporate code of conduct since 2000.
