The House Intelligence Committee has reportedly asked Twitter for more information about the account that posted a viral video of an encounter between Kentucky Catholic school students and a Native American elder over the weekend, HuffPost reports. An aide reportedly told the website the committee was seeking more information from the tech company about the account, which was suspended by Twitter and suspected of being inauthentic. A spokesperson for Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, also told HuffPost his office had asked Twitter for more information. Twitter reportedly confirmed the account, @2020fight, had been suspended by the company but would not say what prompted the account to be shut down.
The account posted a short clip of the encounter between Covington Catholic High School student Nathan Sandmann and a Native American elder in D.C. this weekend. The video quickly went viral, prompting an onslaught of controversy as to what exactly happened leading up to the stare-down. Sandmann claimed his “smirk” was actually a smile and he was trying to defuse the situation. Nathan Phillips, the elder, said it was “scary” to see “hatred” in the eyes of students who were cheering Sandmann during the incident. The Diocese of Covington also announced Tuesday that a third-party probe into the encounter would be launched this week.
