Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reportedly called President Trump to warn him about his public criticism of Christine Blasey-Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault. Sources cited by CNN on Sunday said McConnell reached out to Trump right after the president took to Twitter to cast doubt on Ford’s claims, suggesting that she would have contacted police immediately if they were true. McConnell is said to have told Trump that his comments were not helpful, though no further details were available on the conversation. The president has increasingly defended Kavanaugh against Ford’s allegation in recent days, telling a crowd of supporters in Missouri on Thursday night that Republicans “have to fight” for the Supreme Court nominee. At another rally in Las Vegas, Trump praised Kavanaugh as “one of the finest human beings you will ever have the privilege of knowing or meeting” and said he is a “great gentleman.”
