Special counsel Robert Mueller suggested to President Donald Trump’s lawyers that the commander in chief could be subpoenaed and ordered to appear before a grand jury if he refuses to sit down for an interview with Mueller’s investigative team, according to John Dowd, a former member of the Trump legal team. According to The Washington Post, the suggestion was made during a meeting of the two sides in early March, after Trump’s lawyers said the president is not required to sit for an interview with the special counsel. The Post reports that Dowd, who was on Trump’s legal team at the time, told Mueller that “this isn’t some game” and “you are screwing with the work of the president of the United States.” Jay Sekulow, a member of the president’s legal team, reportedly compiled a list of questions that Trump could be asked, basing the list off information he received from Mueller’s team. That list was leaked Monday to The New York Times.
