Special counsel Robert Mueller has told the White House that his office will “accept written answers from President Trump” to questions about Russian interference in the 2016 election, The New York Times reports. In a letter sent Friday, Mueller’s office also reportedly did not ask for answers on questions about “obstruction of justice” or “issues of executive privilege.” While Muller did not say in the letter that he was giving up his pursuit for an interview with Trump altogether, sources told the newspaper that Trump allies believe the interview—if it were to take place—would have a more limited scope than “Trump’s legal team initially believed.” The news comes after reports of negotiations between Trump’s legal team and Mueller’s office over an in-person interview with the president. It was reported earlier that Mueller wanted to have questions about alleged obstruction of justice on the table during the interview, something the president’s team did not want.
