Roy Moore Sues Accusers Over ‘Political Conspiracy’

Claims multiple women made up misconduct stories to derail his Senate campaign.

Roy Moore—who lost his Senate bid after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct—filed a lawsuit against some of his accusers in Etowah County Circuit Court on Monday, claiming he was the target of a political conspiracy to undermine his campaign during the Alabama special election. “We intend to show the people of Alabama that a political conspiracy came about to ruin his campaign for Senate and to defame him, defame his character, so that the people of Alabama would not vote for him during the special Senate election,” his lawyer said at a press conference Monday afternoon, according to WAAY-TV. The defendants include four women who came forward with sexual-misconduct allegations against Moore when he was the Republican nominee: Leigh Corfman, Debbie Wesson Gibson, Beverly Young Nelson, and Tina Johnson. During the press conference, Moore said he has no plans to run for public office—and denied his accusers’ claims yet again. “I never knew them,” Moore insisted, according to AL.com. “There is no truth to [the allegations].” The lawsuit was filed on several counts, including civil conspiracy, negligence, wantonness, and defamation.
