President Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani on Monday sought to clarify his declaration on Meet the Press that “truth isn’t truth.” “My statement was not meant as a pontification on moral theology but one referring to the situation where two people make precisely contradictory statements, the classic ‘he said, she said’ puzzle. Sometimes further inquiry can reveal the truth other times it doesn’t,” Giuliani tweeted Monday. He also went after former FBI Director James Comey, who tweeted over the weekend that “Truth exists and truth matters,” apparently in response to Giuliani’s comment. “Since proven leaker Comey is now sanctimoniously lecturing us on truth, I can say sometimes the truth is clear it’s the opposite of what Jim Coney [sic] is saying,” Giulani wrote. He made the “truth isn’t truth” comment on Sunday, while telling Meet the Press host Chuck Todd that the president shouldn’t have to testify to prove his innocence. “When you tell me that, you know, he should testify because he’s going to tell the truth so he shouldn’t worry. Well that’s so silly because it’s somebody’s version of the truth, not the truth,” he said. Todd then replied, “Truth is truth.” “No, it isn’t truth. Truth isn’t truth,” Giuliani insisted.
