Russian scientist  Zhores Alferov, who won the Nobel Physics Prize in 2000, died at age 88, officials reportedly announced Saturday. The physicist, who shared the prize for his work in semiconductor research, had also served as a deputy in the Russia’s lower house of parliament since 1995, according to The Associated Press. Research conducted by Alferov, who according to reports died of cardiopulmonary failure, has been used in cellular phone and satellite communication technology, per the AP.
