The Saudi government reminded its citizens this weekend that “sharing or spreading rumors or fake news that might affect public order and security” carries a potential five-year prison sentence and a hefty fine, the Saudi Gazette reports. The notice, which was disseminated by the government’s Public Prosecution office on Saturday, came as the international community continues to pressure the Saudi government over the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who has not been seen in nearly two weeks after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. According to the Saudi Gazette, citizens were reminded to not “produce or spread or share electronically anything that breaches public order, religious values, public morals and privacy,” including through social media networks.
