A Saudi teen who claims she fears death if deported back to her home country arrived in Canada on Saturday after being granted asylum, according to the Associated Press. Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, ran away from her family this week, while they were visiting Kuwait. She then fled to Thailand, planning to seek asylum in Australia. Thai authorities initially didn’t allow her to leave the country, as Saudi officials tried to get al-Qunun forcibly returned to the Kingdom, per reports. “My brothers and family and the Saudi embassy will be waiting for me in Kuwait,” she reportedly said in a phone interview from her hotel room in Thailand. “My life is in danger. My family threatens to kill me for the most trivial things.”Al-Qunun’s case captured international attention after she chronicled her campaign for asylum on social media. After al-Qunun arrived in Toronto’s airport, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland stood by her side and “This a very brave new Canadian.” Al-Qunun posted two pictures to Twitter on Friday documenting her travel to Canada, one with the hashtag “#i_did_it.”
