A non-binding resolution blaming Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi passed unanimously in the Senate Thursday afternoon. The resolution, introduced by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-TN), announces that the Senate “believes Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is responsible for the murder” of Khashoggi. It also calls for Saudi Arabia to “ensure appropriate accountability for all those responsible for Jamal Khashoggi’s murder.” The resolution is reportedly the first official action directly addressing the Khashoggi killing that occurred in early October. President Trump has refused to directly implicate the crown prince in the murder, despite the CIA concluding that he ordered the killing. Khashoggi was killed inside Istanbul’s Saudi Arabian consulate after he entered the building to retrieve papers needed for his planned marriage.
