The Trump administration will move to block an agreement between Chicago and the state of Illinois to reform the Chicago Police Department, HuffPost reports. The agreement between Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan was announced last month after the Trump administration conveyed little interest in negotiating agreements for police reform. In an announcement Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions claimed that a previous agreement made in 2015 between the city of Chicago and the American Civil Liberties Union “kicked off perhaps the greatest surge in murder ever suffered by a major American city.” “Now the city’s leaders are seeking to enter into another agreement. It is imperative that the city not repeat the mistakes of the past—the safety of Chicago depends on it,” Sessions said. “Accordingly, at the end of this week, the Justice Department will file a statement of interest opposing the proposed consent decree… It is critical that Chicago get this right.”
