Nauman Hussein, the acting operator of the limousine company whose vehicle was involved in the Saturday crash that killed 20 people in upstate New York, was arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop and charged with criminally negligent homicide, according to reports. His father, the owner of the company, is out of the country—but his lawyer has said he will return if necessary. This comes after reports surfaced that the limousine had failed an inspection by New York state’s DMV last month and was deemed unfit for operation, and after the family of the limousine’s driver, Scott Lisinicchia, claimed that Lisinicchia had repeatedly complained about the quality of the vehicles he was driving. The Times-Union notes that Lisinicchia received a violation notice for driving without a proper license just weeks before the crash. That notice, which included a trooper’s directive that the limousine be taken out of service immediately, was served directly to Hussein. Last Saturday, Lisinicchia blasted through a T-junction and rammed an unoccupied vehicle, killing himself, the 17 passengers in the limousine, and two bystanders. It was the worst transportation accident in almost a decade.
