Supporters of Luis Antonio Torres, alias “El Americano,” move away from the rotor wash of a military helicopter landing to pick up the vigilante leader and others who voluntarily surrendered to state authorities to cooperate in an investigation. Authorities said a Dec. 16 shootout between rival vigilantes in the western Mexican state left 11 dead, in the clearest sign yet of renewed unrest in an area President Enrique Pena Nieto's government said had been pacified. According to local media, the groups fought at a checkpoint barricade at the entrance to La Ruana. One of the groups, led by a man known by the alias “El Americano,” was upset by the way another vigilante leader, Hipolito Mora, had taken control of the area.
