Marion Hammer, the National Rifle Association’s former national president and Florida’s most powerful gun lobbyist, has filed a federal lawsuit seeking $2 million in damages from five men who she claims have targeted her in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The suit describes the 79-year-old as a “renowned civil-rights advocate” and argues that her Second Amendment advocacy led the men to send her allegedly humiliating “hate and vitriol” through letters, phone calls, and emails. “The defendants have transcended mere criticism and employed threats, harassment, and personal abuse to try to humiliate and intimidate Hammer in a manner that is utterly intolerable in a civilized community,” the lawsuit claims, noting that she is often confronted in public for her beliefs.
