A powerful tropical cyclone has left at least 43 people dead in central Mozambique and Zimbabwe, disabling utilities and phone networks as it ripped through southern Africa, Bloomberg reported. Tropical Cyclone Idai, which Bloomberg described as “the worst to hit Mozambique in at least a decade,” featured winds that exceeded 124 miles-per-hour before hitting land early Friday. The storm came in the wake of extensive flooding in the region, which had resulted in more than 60 deaths. “There has been a lot of damage that we have not yet made the calculation of how much we need to rebuild,” Alberto Mondlane, governor of Mozambique’s worst-hit region, Sofala, reportedly said. “Many homes have been left without a roof.” The United Nations has said that Idai has impacted 1.5 million people, Bloomberg noted.
