President Donald Trump opened a video call with American troops stationed in South Korea on Monday night by asking: “How is Kim Jong Un doing?” Speaking at the Commander-In-Chief Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. just hours after he was sworn in Monday, Trump went on in the video call with U.S. soldiers to boast about how well he got along with the North Korean leader. “You have somebody with pretty bad intentions, I guess, you know, you would say that,” Trump said, referring to Kim. “I developed a pretty good relationship with him but he’s a tough cookie.” Lieutenant General Christopher LaNeve, the Eighth Army commanding general in South Korea, avoided answering the question directly. “Every day we train, and we are planning for anything that you could possibly need us to do,” he said. The U.S. has nearly 30,000 troops in the country to support South Korea’s military and to deter North Korea’s army. Later, at the same event, Trump waved a military sword while dancing to The Village People’s “YMCA,” before cutting a ceremonial cake.
