Donald Trump erroneously linked Patrick Mahomes with Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville on Wednesday, claiming the latter at one point coached the star Kansas City Chiefs quarterback. “And Tommy Tuberville—a great coach,” Trump said during a signing ceremony Wednesday for an executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports. “You know, his quarterback was named ‘Mahomes.’ He was a great college coach. And I said, ‘How good was he?’ He said, ‘You don’t want to know how good. He made me into a great coach.‘ He’s a pretty good quarterback, right? Yeah, he was very good. He’s a good guy, too.” Tuberville was head coach at Texas Tech from 2010 to 2012. Mahomes played college football at Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016 before entering the NFL draft. His coach then was Kliff Kingsbury. Trump has said he will attend Super Bowl LVIV on Sunday in New Orleans between the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, in so doing becoming the first sitting president to show up at the Big Game.
