Donald Trump’s traveling circus arrived in Pennsylvania on Thursday night, where he dedicated the majority of a rally to—surprise, surprise—attacking the media. In a rally that was supposedly designed to strengthen Republican Rep. Lou Barletta’s attempt to unseat Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, Trump repeated his threat to shut down the government over funding for his border wall with Mexico. But he spent most of his time attacking the media as “fake, fake disgusting news,” the same day his daughter Ivanka took a rare divergence from her father by saying it was wrong to describe the media as the enemy of the people. “Whatever happened to the free press? Whatever happened to honest reporting?” Trump asked, pointing to the media in the back of the hall. “They don’t report it. They only make up stories.” He went on: “Only negative stories from the fakers back there.” According to the Associated Press, Trump’s supporters “jeered and screamed at the press in the holding pen at the back of the arena.” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was condemned Thursday for repeatedly refusing to say the media is not the “enemy of the people” during the daily White House press briefing.
