President Trump signed a stopgap bill Friday that will punt the deadline for an agreement on the contentious funding debate for two weeks, The Hill reports. The bill, passed unanimously in the House and Senate earlier this week, averts the government shutdown that would have begun today, Dec. 7, and sets the new date as Dec. 21. The move is partially a result of the death of George H.W. Bush, which stymied congressional proceedings in the days leading up to the initial deadline. The Hill notes that the next two weeks of debate will center on the amount of funding given to build Trump’s border wall, which Democrats vociferously oppose. Trump has threatened to force a partial government shutdown if he doesn’t get the money he seeks.
