President Donald Trump has decided to nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to succeed Nikki Haley as the United Nations ambassador, Bloomberg News reports, citing three sources familiar with the matter. While Nauert is widely seen as an unorthodox choice due to her lack of government or foreign policy experience, sources told Bloomberg that she gained the trust of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and is “closely aligned” with White House senior advisers Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Before joining the administration, Nauert spent several years as an anchor and correspondent on Fox News and made appearances on Fox & Friends. Trump reportedly considered White House aide Dina Powell, ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft, and ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell to take Haley’s place after she announced she would be leaving her post by the end of the year. Haley announced in October that she would be stepping down from her post because she needed a break after two years at the U.N. and two terms as South Carolina’s governor. While the news reportedly took the White House by surprise, Haley stressed there was no beef between her and Trump. She even reportedly vowed to campaign for the president in 2020.
