President Donald Trump on Thursday said he has “total confidence” in Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a day after it was revealed that he had conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. without disclosing it to a Senate committee during his confirmation hearing. The White House was reportedly unaware of Sessions’ contact with the Russian ambassador before The Washington Post’s initial report on Wednesday night. A growing chorus of Democrats is calling on Sessions to resign, while some Republicans have joined Democrats’ calls for a special prosecutor to spearhead an independent probe into the Trump campaign’s alleged communication with Russian officials. Trump said he does not believe Sessions, who served in a top role in the campaign, should recuse himself, adding that Sessions “probably” testified truthfully about his contacts with the Russians.
