Tumblr Confirms Daily Beast Reporting on Russian Troll Farm
SQUARING THE CIRCLE
Tumblr on Friday morning released two separate posts confirming prior reporting from The Daily Beast identifying accounts on the site that were operated by a Russian troll farm. “Last fall, we uncovered 84 Tumblr accounts linked to the Russian government through the Internet Research Agency, or IRA,” the company stated. “These accounts were being used as part of a disinformation campaign leading up to the 2016 U.S. election. After uncovering the activity, we notified law enforcement, terminated the accounts, and deleted their original posts. Behind the scenes, we worked with the Department of Justice, and the information we provided helped indict 13 people who worked for the IRA.” In a separate post, the company named those 84 accounts, as well as previous aliases for those accounts. Among those listed are “Swag in the Rain,” “Hustle in a Trap,” and “Ghetta Blasta.” In two separate stories earlier this month, The Daily Beast identified these specific accounts as being operated by the IRA. BuzzFeed News and CNN had also previously reported on the presence of propaganda accounts on the website. Specifically, The Daily Beast reported that a Tumblr account under the name "This Truly Brutal World" shared advertisements for rallies that were pushed by the IRA. At the time of publishing these stories, Tumblr informed The Daily Beast that it had been cooperating with law enforcement but did not say how many accounts generated by the IRA had been identified in total. —Gideon Resnick
