Two California Cities Ban ‘Horrible’ Use of Rodent Glue Traps

Ojai, California, became the second city in the country to ban the sale and use of glue traps for rodents, according to the Los Angeles Times. Jakob Shaw, special projects manager for PETA, spoke before the city council on Tuesday, and explained that glue traps harm more than just pests, trapping 180 species of wildlife, according to the Wild-ONe database. “They pose a threat to every amazing animal who lives in and around Ojai,” Shaw said. “They’re just these horrible, indiscriminate killing devices that permanently disable, injure and kill countless small animals every single year.” The ban passed unanimously in the city council, which previously approved an ordinance granting elephants “bodily liberty.” The CDC does not recommend the use of glue traps because they “can scare the rodents causing them to urinate,” which increases the likelihood of spreading illnesses to humans. In January, Reps. Ted Lieu (D-CA) and Adam Schiff (D-NY) introduced the Glue Trap Prohibition Act, which would implement a nationwide ban on the wildlife control product.
