Two investigative journalists who worked on a documentary on the Loughinisland massacre in Northern Ireland have been arrested on suspicion of stealing confidential documents. The two men—producer Trevor Birney and journalist Barry McCaffrey—worked on No Stone Unturned, which re-examined the murder of six men at Loughinisland in 1994 and alleges the shooter was a former British soldier and his killing spree was covered up by authorities. The film drew considerable controversy upon its release for naming the suspected gunmen. Early Friday, filmmaker Alex Gibney tweeted: “Alert: @trevorbirney my producer on “No Stone Unturned,” and journalist @Barry_TheDetail have just been arrested in Belfast, NI, for doing good, hard-hitting journalism. Outrageous. Raise ruckus.” A local police spokesperson said: “The theft of these documents potentially puts lives at risk and we will follow the evidence wherever it leads us.”
