U.K. Ditches ‘European Union’ From British Passports

WHY WAIT?

All British passports issued after original Brexit date of March 29 are no longer emblazoned with European Union.

The United Kingdom started issuing post-Brexit British passports without the words “European Union” even though they haven’t yet left the bloc, according to the Guardian. The U.K. was supposed to leave the E.U. on March 29, but has been plagued by a series of delays after the prime minister Theresa May was unable to pass the deal she agreed with the E.U. in parliament. The Home Office responded to criticism about the new passport design by saying that the change is part of a two-step redesign: “Passports that include the words ‘European Union’ will continue to be issued for a short period after this date. You will not be able to choose whether you get a passport that includes the words ‘European Union’ or a passport that does not.”
