Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN), the only member of Congress who was born in Ukraine, opposes the $60 billion package which would send more aid to her beleaguered home country, the Wall Street Journal reports. “I understand the importance of this battle and the implications if Russia is going to prevail, but I’m also not very naive. If we don’t have proper oversight, we are not going to achieve our goals,” she said on Thursday. “We cannot have these never-ending wars.” Spartz said she would be focusing less on Ukraine going forward, and would prioritize cutting government spending. Democrats were disappointed by her inability to shore up Republican support for Ukraine. Spartz said she opposes the current proposal, but might be swayed by an alternative which swapped money for weapons, added oversight, and stricter immigration rules at the U.S. border. House Speaker Mike Johnson is still desperately searching for a way to soften up GOP resistance to the bill, before it is expected to head to a vote in mid-April.
