U.N. Has List of Syrian War Criminals

The United Nations said on Monday that it has a list of war criminals in the country’s two-year civil war—from both sides of the conflict. Based on 445 interviews conducted abroad with victims and witnesses, the U.N. said Syrians in “leadership positions” in government and among the armed rebels are committing the crimes, including killings and torture. The list will be kept secret, but the independent team of investigators called upon the U.N. Security Council to “act urgently to ensure accountability,” suggesting the violators could end up in front of the International Criminal Court. The death toll in Syria’s ongoing civil war is nearing 70,000, said the U.N.’s High Commissioner for Human Rights.
