U.S. Detains Five Pirates

The coast of Somalia just got a little safer: During a firefight early Thursday morning, the USS Nicholas sank a pirate skiff, captured a pirate mother ship, and apprehended five pirates just west of the Seychelles. According to the U.S. Africa Command, the seized pirates will remain in U.S. custody for the moment. Experts believe that piracy in the region will continue until Somalia establishes an effective government, a feat the country hasn't accomplished in the last 19 years.
