The U.S.-led coalition in Syria announced Tuesday that it attacked Islamic State targets in Syria between Dec. 16-22. The attack included airstrikes and “coordinated fires” against ISIS logistics facilities and staging areas. The coalition said its strikes “removed several hundred ISIS fighters from the battlefield” and hurt the group’s ability to pay for terrorist activities. “ISIS presents a very real threat to the long-term stability in this region and our mission remains the same, the enduring defeat of ISIS,” said UK Major General Christopher Ghika, the coalition’s deputy commander. His statements differ from recent statements made by President Donald Trump, who recently announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. He tweeted Wednesday, “We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.”
