A Liberian Army soldier, part of the Ebola Task Force, beats a local resident while enforcing a quarantine on the West Point slum. The government ordered the quarantine of the congested seaside slum of 75,000 in an effort to stop the spread of the virus in the capital city. Liberian soldiers were also sent in to the seaside favela to extract West Point Commissioner Miata Flowers and her family members after residents blamed the government for setting up a holding center for suspected Ebola patients in their community. A mob overran and closed the facility on August 16. The military also began enforcing a quarrantine on West Point, a congested slum of 75,000, fearing a spread of the epidemic. The Ebola virus has killed more than 1,200 people in four African nations, more in Liberia than any other country. (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images)

A man lies under a car after being put there in detention by the Liberian army on the second day of the government’s Ebola quarantine on their neighborhood of West Point. An army officer said the man was showing symptoms of Ebola and was caught trying to escape from West Point. The government delivered bags of rice, beans, and cooking oil to residents, who are forbidden from leaving the seaside slum due to the Ebola outbreak in their community. More than 1,200 people have died due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

Newborn giant panda triplets born to giant panda Juxiao (not pictured) are seen inside an incubator at the Chimelong Safari Park. According to local media, this is the fourth set of giant panda triplets born with the help of artificial insemination procedures in China, and the longest to survive so far. The birth is seen as a miracle due to the low reproduction rate of giant pandas.
