The insurgent offensive that has threatened to dismember Iraq spread to the northwest of the country on Sunday, when Sunni militants launched a dawn raid on a town close to the Syrian border, clashing with police and government forces. Islamic State in Iraq and the Sham fighters and other Sunni Muslim armed groups have stormed several towns on the road to Baghdad after seizing the city of Mosul nearly a week ago.

Despite protests by some local residents and sex workers, Tri Rismaharini closed the Dolly red-light district and neighboring Jarak red-light district in Indonesia’s second-largest city on Wednesday. Many in the community support the end of the sex trade in Dolly’s streets, with some Islamic groups reportedly threatening violence should the brothels not remain closed.
