Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad supervise the evacuation process of rebel fighters from the old city. After holding the area for nearly two years, about 1,200 rebel fighters and trapped civilians boarded buses that took them out of the “capital of the revolution” in convoys on Wednesday and Thursday, activists said. On Thursday, Syrian forces took full control over the city, once associated with scenes of joyous pro-democracy crowds but now famed for images of ruin that epitomize the brutality of Syria’s civil war.

An anti-government protester attempts to catch a gas canister thrown by police during a protest against President Nicolas Maduro’s government. Venezuelan security forces on Thursday rounded up hundreds of youth activists and dismantled camps set up as part of protests against Maduro, leading angry residents to stage demonstrations against the move. Pre-dawn raids by National Guard troops broke up four tent camps maintained by student activists as part of a three-month wave of protests that have steadily waned over recent weeks, even as sporadic clashes continue.

Women holding signs take part in a protest demanding the release of more than 200 abducted secondary school girls from the remote village of Chibok, in northeast Nigeria. The Islamist militant group Boko Haram claimed responsibility on Monday for the attack, the French news agency AFP reported, citing a video it had obtained. Boko Haram stormed the school on April 14, then packed the teenage girls, who had been taking exams, onto trucks and disappeared into a remote area along the border with Cameroon.
