An aerial view of the Atibainha dam, part of the Cantareira reservoir, during a drought in São Paulo state. Brazil’s worst drought in 80 years has left the Cantareira system, which provides greater São Paulo with most of its water, with its lowest water level on record, with daily rationing becoming common in the region’s smaller cities, according to the state authorities. The two main reservoirs serving metropolitan São Paulo, South America’s largest city, could dry out by February if relief does not arrive in the upcoming rainy season.

Ghost statues by artist Jakub Hadrava are placed at the St. George’s church near Plzen. Artist Jakub Hadrava created 32 plaster life-size ghost statues, which symbolize Sudeten Germans who lived in the village. St. George’s church, which was build in the northwestern Bohemian region of the Czech Republic in 1352, fell into disrepair after the roof collapsed during a funeral service in 1968. Hadrava’s aim is to make the church more attractive for visitors and to earn money for renovation work. According to voluntary church manager Petr Koukl, about 2,500 people from around the world have visited the church this year.
