President Trump was scheduled to have an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team in January, but the interview was canceled after the special counsel’s office told the White House what topics it wanted to discuss with the president. The Associated Press reports the interview was set for Jan. 27, and the planning process went far enough to involve chief of staff John Kelly to discuss logistics. Kelly reportedly recommended the president be taken to Camp David for the questioning without the press knowing. As the date neared, Mueller team prosecutor Jim Quarles reportedly told the White House about “16 topics Mueller wanted to cover” in the interview—including “Trump’s interactions with Comey, his knowledge of national security adviser Michael Flynn’s interview with the FBI and his involvement in the Trump Tower statement.” The AP reports John Dowd, who was then Trump’s lawyer, canceled the interview and told Mueller’s team that answers to those questions could be found in “documents and witness statements.” Dowd also reportedly questioned the interview’s “appropriateness” in a letter. The president recently submitted written answers to Mueller’s questions about Russian interference, reportedly leaving out issues like obstruction of justice.
