It’s that time of year again: The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where politics, media, and celebrity all converge. The WHCD is set to take place at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, April 28.
Stand-up comedian and former Daily Show correspondent Michelle Wolf will emcee the evening, following in the footsteps of Hasan Minhaj, Larry Wilmore, and Cecily Strong, just to name a few.
What was once an annual celebration of the relationship between the White House and the press has morphed over the years into an event commonly referred to as “nerd prom,” a night for journalists and stars alike to toast the freedom of the press.
In the era of “fake news” and the Trump administration, where the realms of celebrity and politics have become nearly indistinguishable, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner should make for an especially interesting and eventful evening.
The president himself has announced that, like last year, he will not be attending the dinner, and is sending press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in his stead. Perhaps one of the reasons he is opting out is his concern over the traditional roast-like atmosphere of the dinner, where host Michelle Wolf is sure to lay in to him. After all, legend has it that it was Seth Meyers’ Trump burn at the 2011 dinner that spurred him to run for President a few years later.
Under an administration that has called the media "the enemy of the American people," the dynamic will be especially tense. You won’t want to miss it, here’s how to tune in.
