A white supremacist at the center of one of the most brutal videos to come out of last year’s notorious Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been found guilty of malicious wounding for his attack on a black man in a parking garage. Jacob Scott Goodwin, 23, can be seen in footage of the Aug. 12, 2017, incident joining in a mob of helmet-clad, shield-wielding men as they pummeled 20-year-old DeAndre Harris while he was on the ground. Harris suffered a spinal injury, a broken arm, and severe head lacerations as a result of the attack. Goodwin, who was decked out as if preparing for battle at the time of the assault, tried to convince the jury he was “terrified” of Harris and acting only in self-defense. The jury instead recommended he get a sentence of 10 years behind bars. The sentencing date is set for Aug. 23. Three other men involved in the confrontation also face charges ranging from felonious assault to malicious wounding.
