After 80 years uptown, the Whitney Museum board of trustees voted Tuesday to begin construction on a new building located in Manhattan’s meatpacking district—a move that they hope will redefine the storied museum. Currently located in a building designed by architect Marcel Breuer, the museum is so small for the current collection that only 150 of around 18,000 pieces can be shown permanently. Although earlier rumors said board members argued over the move, the move was approved unanimously. The Breuer building may end up being shared with another institution.
