Whoopi Goldberg is famously sober, but that won’t stop her from giving others a good time. The EGOT winner (who already owns an umbrella of cannabis brands) has reintroduced her eponymous brand of prosecco, made of organic Glera grapes that are hand-harvested in Italy’s Asolo region (a high-altitude locale known for its mineral-rich morainic soils). The result is a crisp and acidic pour that calls on lemon and delicate floral notes (acacia and wisteria) to quell sweetness. What’s more, it produces the kind of tight, tiny bubbles that mark far more expensive bottles of sparkling wine.
“It’s a gift to my friends because I really want people to feel good and feel better,” she says of the affordably priced libation that is classified as Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (D.O.C.G.) by Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture, its highest level of quality for wine. “This is my foray into helping that happen, especially if you don’t marry well.”
We knew Goldberg would be a sage on the topic of treating oneself. (After all, this is the woman who wisely said of marriage and cohabitation: “I don’t want somebody in my house.”) She proved us right when we recently sat down with the performer during one of her rare trips to Los Angeles. “I’m really happy to wake up every day. I celebrate as much as I can for all of my friends who didn’t get to be my age,” she says.
What we didn’t expect? The affluent multi-hyphenate luxuriates in so many affordable pleasures, starting with one that takes no capital investment at all: “Time—I just take it on any given day,” she says. “I’m really happiest when I can just chill at home. That’s when I don’t have to be Whoopi Goldberg.” And, she doesn’t need company to entertain at home either. “On any given day, I don’t know if there’s a thing that will make me [say] ‘done, now it’s me [time].’ Sometimes it’s wanting something really good to eat—and I’m the worst cook—but I like setting my table just for me,” she says.
Ahead, she shares other easy ways to help celebrate everyday life.
