Williams Beats Schnyder at French Open

Tennis

In a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Dressed fittingly in a “can-can”-themed tennis dress, Venus Williams beat-out longtime rival Patty Schnyder in the first round of the French Open on Sunday. The win is the latest in a series of achievements for the elder Williams sister: She currently holds the year’s top record on the women’s tour (27-4), and for the first time since 2003, last week she reached second in the rankings, behind only Serena. "I always—goes without saying—believe I can win," Williams said after Sunday’s match. She’ll be joined by defending tournament champ Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round.
