Wisconsin Teacher Placed on Leave for Allegedly Telling Kids to Find Games Played by ‘Enslaved Children’
OUTRAGE
A Wisconsin teacher has been placed on leave after allegedly telling black students in the class to research games played by “enslaved children.” The suggestion came as part of an activity for seventh-grade students to play games from around the world. CNN affiliate WTMJ reported that students alleged they were separated in groups based on their race. Alexis Averette, a student in the class told WTMJ she was forced to “reenact slavery in front of the entire class,” and was told to demonstrate the game after she said she was uncomfortable. “How many more times do people have to feel uncomfortable until change happens?” said MaHailey Stephens, another student in the class. The district, which has an internal investigation, said it will “continue to assess the situation” and provide ongoing support to students.
